Mich Chu – the General Manager of Eastgate Relocation has been working in the relocation industry for 14 years. She has been progressively taking part in company’s long-term planning and business development since she was first invited to join in 2006. She is persevered in motivating team members creating the synergy to achieve company’s ultimate goal of service excellence. In 2013, Mich was named the Partner and General Manager of the Company by Kaikai, the founder and the President of the company. Under her leadership, the company had expanded with branch office to support people relocating to all cities across Taiwan.

Mich is passionate of helping people adapting quickly to their new job and new life. She continues to strengthen her knowledge of the constant changing relocation industry by attending worldwide mobility conferences such as EuRA and Worldwide ERC.

In this interview, Mich Chu answers industry-related questions and shares how they survived the ups and downs and retained their clients. How did the idea for your business come out?

Kaikai, the founder and President of the business was the wife of a former German diplomat who had been helping other expat wives relocated to Taiwan. In the late 80’s, one company she helped happened to be Cendent Mobility’s (formerly Cartus) major client. Cendent came to Taiwan and did a mock tour and was pleased. They asked Kaikai if she would like to work together being their Taiwan contact. This is how Eastgate was established.

What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur in the relocation industry?

The passion to helping people adapt a new lifestyle and appreciate a differet culture whilst living in Taiwan.

How did you come up with the name of your company?

East Gate was one of the main gates located in the capital city which was built during the Qing Dynasty. The founder took the name, literally meaning “The entrance to the East”.

How do you build a successful and consistent customer base?

Being detail-oriented and keen on always guarding our customer’s best interests.

How do you market your business, and which tactics have been the most successful?

  • Providing market updates
  • Provide local insights with partnering RMCs to help them win RFPs.
  • Being a family member of Reloc8 has also been a great support in exposure and hearing industry updates.

    What kind of culture exists in your company, and how did you establish it?

    We believe the team works seamlessly with harmony and teamwork. We have a mixture of team members ranging in age from mid 20’s, 30’s to early 40’s. All team members can easily relate to their peers to seek advice and exchange personal experiences.

    What motivates you to work in the relocation industry?

    My passion to help people and seeing them love being in Taiwan.

    To know more about your own country and sharing what it can offer with the international community.

    It’s the best career starter and a great opportunity to connect with people all around the world.

    What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful in the relocation business?

  • A willingness to understand other’s points of view
  • To always pay attention to detail and be accurate in the information shared with clients
  • An ability to provide consultative advice, suggestions and recommendations upon enquiry

    As we have all had to navigate the Coronavirus pandemic, what is the most important thing you have learned this year in the context of our industry?

    There are always unpredicted disasters, no matter whether naturally occuring or manmade. Taiwan is considered to be a country less impacted by COVID-19, thanks to the proactive measures taken by the government when the virus first occurred. We have to adapt to new lifestyles or working practices in order to survive.
