There have been many challenges and rewards that I have learned from running the business and I appreciate them all

I never imagined that I would still be running the same business 33 years later. A niche that started as a result of an American businessman’s comment “it’s so difficult to do business in the Philippines” created the idea to form a company with the primary purpose of providing a one-stop business center for foreign businessmen – says Dornet Venturanza, Founder & CEO of Annexus International.

Year 2020 ...... and I never imagined that I would still be running the same business 33 years later. A niche that started as a result of an American businessman’s comment “it’s so difficult to do business in the Philippines” created the idea to form a company with the primary purpose of providing a one-stop business center for foreign businessmen.

Annexus International was founded in 1987, a year after the People Power Revolution of 1986 against President Ferdinand Marcos’ 20-year regime. Incorporated together with 4 business friends (as required by the SEC when establishing a corporation), we were all excited and set up an office against all odds...a niche idea that developed into a business!

The name Annexus was coined from Annex-Us or Business Link as evident in our logo.

Despite our enthusiasm as young entrepreneurs, the business didn’t take off. With no confidence to invest under a new government following a revolt - my business partners lasted only 2 years before going our separate ways. This was unfortunate, and with cash flowing out, no revenue and no bright future, I had to make the decision whether to close, alone.

Well, as I am NO quitter, I decided to continue to run the business alone, despite depleted funds. My focus and determination drove me to continue doing business. And it paid off after years of hard work, dedication and humility. After 10 years, with a business reputation established and the trust and loyalty of foreign clients, I was proud and satisfied of what I had accomplished.

Then one day out of nowhere, an overseas call changed my whole business landscape! The call came from the team of Michael Schell’s Global Relocation Partnership (GRP) Network – at a time when global relocation was unheard of in the Philippines or even in Asia-Pacific. The GRP Network was my entry into corporate global relocation. It gave me a once in a lifetime opportunity to pioneer the global relocation industry in the Philippines. As we were the exclusive partner representing our country, we were envied by everyone who wanted to be part of the network. GRP was my first relocation family and still is, although we are all ready for retirement! Special thanks always to Ilene Dolins, our mother of the GRP Network. I am sure the majority of the Reloc8 partners can relate, since we were all once part of the GRP network. I didn’t realise it at the time, but relocation services were Annexus’ core business since its inception in 1987!

There have been many challenges and rewards that I have learned from running the business and I appreciate them all. Annexus’ continued success comes from our two biggest assets: my employees and our Global Partners and their corporate clients. Working in the relocation industry, it’s important to have the trust and respect of your peers and clients, the perseverance to handle all challenges and miles of patience and empathy. It’s also important to know how to deal with stress by giving time to yourself if you can. Aside from running Annexus, travelling is my passion and I have to thank our industry for taking me all over the world, giving me a legitimate reason to be out of the country and have an official R&R at least 3 times a year.

While we can all hope that Covid 19 is a once in a lifetime pandemic, a great deal can be learned from this to help plan for the future: Always plan ahead and learn to adapt, which have been my business motto since I started. Never get complacent that you will always be ahead and on top. I experienced real difficulties when I started 30 years ago, but always found a way to survive. A global pandemic can devastate small businesses like ours and have a lasting impact in our industry. I hope it won’t last too long!
