It was only a few decades ago that beer lovers in Taiwan had such a limited choice of their favorite brew available to them. Now, those times have changed. Cottinghams started to import various lagers, then came Belgium strong beers followed by Moosehead from Canada thanks to Joe O Brien, St. Peters stouts and bitters from England, thank you Hal Falls and Mike Boyden plus Maxl Rainer wheat beer and pils from Bavaria due to Stefan Liedl. There are many other brands too of course but why import our beloved brew when it is possible to make your own.?
If you enjoy craft beer culture- visiting breweries and taprooms, Taiwan has some great locally produced beer and fun spots at which to enjoy it.
23 Brewing Company was founded in 2014 by Americans Matt Frazar and Brett Tieman. 23 has fostered its success and garnered the attention of locals, expats and tourists by focusing on quality and by steadily releasing a growing roster of authentic American style brews. “Coming from America, we know how important quality and consistency is to the average beer consumer and we work hard to keep this level high.” - Brett, 23 Brewing.
23 Brewing Company’s range includes: light, easy-drinking, hop forward pales, luscious dark stouts, and vibrant sours. The brand clearly enjoys having fun with its marketing and beer names as evidenced by the popular Hipster’s Don’t Drink, IPA. “Brett and I like to have fun with our company and its culture, as well in the pub drinking our beers, so why not have a laugh at the little things life brings us?” Brewer Matt said. “If you like to have a few beers and a few laughs, 23 is the beer for you.”
If you’re looking for a great neighborhood watering hole or some standup comedy- English (Mondays) and Chinese (Thursdays), 23 Public is the place for you. Opened in 2017 by the 23 Brewing team, it has become one of the best spots in Taipei to grab a flight or a few pints of authentic American style craft beer made locally in Taiwan. There are generally 3-4 guest beers on tap as well so you can get a taste of what else Taiwan has to offer. 23 Public’s friendly staff and laid back atmosphere make it a great destination pub or addition to any pub crawl.
