This Abode of Sincerity (the honorific title of the state of Selangor) though moderately sized, has the largest economy in Malaysia, providing 22% of the nation’s GDP, and is one of the most developed states as well. It is diverse in its people as well as its attractions. Selangor boasts natural wonders such as the magnificent Batu Caves which is a series of limestone caves housing the largest Lord Murugan statue in the world, Broga Hill which is the highest point in Selangor and provides a beautiful 360° view of its surroundings, and marvel at nature’s light show at the Kuala Selangor Fireflies Village which is said to house the largest firefly colonies in the world. These are but a taste of Selangor’s natural wonders.
As a developed state, and with its close proximity to KL, Selangor boasts many world-class urban amenities such as top-notch shopping centres, well-equipped private medical facilities, top private and international schools, and highly-rated theme parks. As the most populous state in Malaysia, and the largest conurbation, there is definitely a lot to explore in Selangor, so let us focus our attention on its cultural centre of Petaling Jaya (known affectionately to locals as PJ. Developed initially as a satellite town for KL due to its expanding population in 1954, PJ has certainly grown leaps and bounds, and its identity has been expanded from its initial plan as a satellite town.
Though PJ is not the capital of Selangor (Shah Alam has that honour), it is a city that has grown organically and has a more “local” feel compared to KL or even Georgetown, Penang. You can observe many locals going to the same exact food shops and cafes that have stood at the same location for years. Although just adjacent to each other, living in PJ can be worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of KL. Saying that, as an expatriate, you are able to find world-class facilities for you and your family.
Some of the more well-known international schools are located in Petaling Jaya. The British International School of Kuala Lumpur, St. Joseph's Institution International School Malaysia, and Sunway International School are definitely worth checking out.
Private Medical Centres
PJ is home to well-established and rated medical centres, which have excellent medical professionals who are able to converse in English. Some of the more well-known ones are, KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital, Assunta Hospital, and Columbia Asia Hospital.
You are able to explore small shops located in PJ’s “Old Town” for some bargains and antiques, or go posh by finding your designer wear at trendy shopping malls.
- Amcorp Mall - This mall is well known for its flea market, where you can anything from old Coke bottles to collectible comic books for affordable prices.
- 1 Utama - If shopping is your idea of exercise, then this is the place for you. The largest mall in Malaysia, and the seventh largest mall in the world, you can literally spend the whole day here and not see everything. Recommended for shopaholics.
- Sunway Pyramid - With its unique Egyptian-inspired design, this mall boasts the first skating rink in Malaysia and is home to many international stores like Marks & Spencer, Dorothy Perkins, and Violetta to name a few.
Selangor is truly a sight to behold, with its many attractions and sights to mesmerise expatriates and locals alike. PJ too is a city that manages to make you feel at home yet has that modern urban experience required for active individuals. Come and experience a city that is comparable to its tagline of being “Friendly, Fast and Precise”.
