Singapore – Healthcare

Singapore is regarded as a regional centre of medical excellence. You will find well-trained doctors and staff making it Asia’s leading hub for a wide range of medical services for local and international patients.

Healthcare practice in Singapore

The Ministry of Health (MOH) regulates the standard and practice of healthcare services. It manages the five professional boards governing the medical conduct and ethics of Singaporean medical professionals, which are the Singapore Medical Council, Singapore Nursing Board, Singapore Dental Board, Pharmacy Board and Laboratory Board. All private hospitals, medical clinics, clinical laboratories and nursing homes are required to maintain a good standard of medical services through licensing by MOH.

Medical practice advertisements except dentistry are not allowed, thus, it is important that one knows who to call upon when in need of medical help.

The Ministry of Health regulates both public and private healthcare providers and publishes average fees for dental procedures and for certain in-patient medical conditions.

Both private and public hospitals have 24-hour Accident and Emergency units (A&E). You may dial in for ambulance service.

Government hospitals offer different ward classes ranging from single-bedder wards to 12-bedder and open wards.  Going public does not necessarily mean forgoing all comforts!  A single bedder room with air-conditioning in a public hospital may not be as glamorous as one in a private hospital but you will still receive excellent care.

Visit to the Doctor/Dentist

Your First Visit
To visit a doctor or dentist, simply register yourself at the clinic. Every neighbourhood has a General Practitioner Private Clinic where one can pop in. Most private clinics are open 9:00am to 5:00pm. If you need a doctor late at night and it doesn’t warrant a trip to an A&E department, you can either go to your regular clinic if they have late hours or find a doctor that makes house calls through Mobile Doctors.

This list is in no way exhaustive. It is simply designed to give you a starting point on your arrival. Where you go eventually depends on your company’s medical insurance policy, proximity to your home or office and recommendations from friends or colleagues. Some companies provide lists of preferred doctors and clinics so do check with your HR department.

Public Out-Patient Healthcare
Polyclinics are government run medical and dental centres that provide low-cost healthcare to citizens, permanent resident and non-resident. The three tier rates though subsidized for citizens is still a reasonably priced alternative for foreigners. Common primary healthcare services include:

  • Outpatient medical treatment
  • Medical follow-ups after discharge from hospital
  • Immunization
  • Health screening and education
  • Diagnostic and pharmaceutical services

As necessary, patients may be referred to hospitals if more specialized treatment or hospitalization is required.  For more information, log on to and
